My students need more flexible seating options such as balance balls, floor cushions, and loungers. In this order are various options for my students to do their best work.
As a 5th grade teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Some come from homes where English is their second language. More than half of the school population receives free and reduced lunch. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. I want to make school a safe and comfortable place to learn and open their minds to the many possibilities that they are able to achieve.
My Project
My goal is to give students the opportunity to work where they will be the most productive and successful. It is hard for students to sit in hard plastic chairs for the majority of the day. They get restless and many students fidget and constantly ask to get up. This ends up disrupting other classmates and students learning.
My vision is to allow students to choose to do their work while comfortably sitting on floor cushions, yoga mats, balance balls, or stools.
They can move freely and have positive interactions while learning. I want the students to enjoy learning and give them the option to choose how they want to learn.
