My Students
My students come from a small rural community in the heart of Illinois. Our small classes allow our students to create a classroom environment filled with compassion and caring.
My junior high students come to school energetic and ready to learn every day!
They enjoy movement and hands-on activities the most. It is hard for most of them to stay engaged while sitting in a hard, uncomfortable chair all day. They often get fidgety and restless.
I would like the opportunity to offer them more flexible seating options that will make them more comfortable while they are learning! A comfortable learning environment will lead to more student engagement, which means more success!
My Project
At my school, where I teach 6th, 7th, & 8th grade Language Arts, I am the first middle school teacher to incorporate a flexible seating model. Because of limited funding for public schools, I have used my own money to begin to build a better classroom environment. So far I have introduced high top tables and stools, low tables and beach chairs, dining tables and chairs, yoga mats and pillows all found at local garage sales. It has been a huge success!
Student engagement has gone up in all my classes!
They are more comfortable and engaged when they get to wiggle and move around. The boys in my classroom especially love the high top tables and chairs, and the girls like to complete their research and other work sitting on yoga mats with pillows. Students should be able to choose a place to work and learn that is comfortable for them.
In order to do that I would like to add some balance balls, swivel chairs, and a bench for my students to choose from in class. Each day brings new moods and new attitudes, and having a say in where you sit for class can be the key to turning your day around. Just like taking a break at a coffee shop to unwind and relax, students should have the opportunity to do the same in their classroom. This is just the beginning of the many options I hope to offer my students.
Learning should be a relaxing and motivating experience!
