Flexible Seating Means Flexible Thinking in the Art Classroom
Help me give my students better workspace in art to let the creativity and learning flow in a flexible seating environment that supports all learning styles.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My art room needs to be more student-centered where students have more seating choices in the classroom. I firmly believe as educators we should meet the students where they are. I plan to redesign the art room so students can choose where they sit. In addition, students need collaborative opportunities in the classroom. I want to restructure my classroom so that we can offer flexible seating, therefore, creating an environment suitable for students in 4th and 5th grades. Our long-term classroom goal is to include 4 standing desks, 3 standing easels, a low-floor table, stools for 25 students, and 3 high-quality art tables with storage options.
The curriculum is challenging and the students are learning and using their creativity.
Many students have difficulty focusing and some perform better academically when standing or moving. More importantly, kids are naturally wired to move and need to move at this age. Standing options also benefit students who work better while standing-- an active mind requires an active body. A redesigned art room will benefit student learning, creativity, and productivity.
