This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th grade class is full of unique personalities. My students are creative, funny, supportive, hardworking and authentic! My students have ownership of their own learning. We have created an environment where they hold each other accountable not only in the classroom but outside the classroom, too!
Creating community is essential to taking risks and deeper learning.
Every student in my classroom has a unique voice and everyone in the room respects this. I take the time to know my students well and not just as learners but also as people. It has helped create a real sense of belonging in our classroom community. No matter the obstacles they face outside the class, they strive to be the best they can be every single day.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take ownership of their learning and choose the seating which works best for them. During math class, they will be able to choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Making students feel comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
Students are more engaged and calm when they are able to choose what works best for them rather than when they are just sitting at their desk.
They also are less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work. The items that I have chosen will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices.
The comfy bean bag chairs will allow them to work in comfortable seats with the lap desks, and the rug will create a huge open space for them to get comfy on. Lastly, the bookshelves will help us organize our center materials.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my students' work and has made them successful! I hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
