Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach 5th grade in a diverse K-5 school with a growing population of over 550 students. The majority of the students are eligible for free or reduced lunch and come from homes where English is a second language. Most students do not have access to a great deal of technology at home. Aside from the lack of resources, my students are energetic and excited to learn. In a diverse classroom, students academic abilities range and students suffer from a variety of academic challenges: learning disabilities, ADD, ADHD, sensory issues, anxiety and much more.

Unfortunately, many of my students have a difficult time coping with these challenges. Many of my students are working below grade level in all subjects, making it difficult to meet the demands of the 5th-grade curriculum. It is my job to provide my students with support, both academically and emotionally.

Alternative seating has been a proven strategy to increase student success in the classroom. I currently have some alternative seating options, however, my class is in need of more to ensure accessibility to all students as well as an option that takes up less room, as space is limited. “If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.” - Ignacio Estrada. These flexible seating options are a great way to increase student engagement and focus during the school day. My students will be excited to work with these as their new seating options!
