Flexible Seating, Lower the Affective Filter!

My students need a variety of seating options so they can feel comfortable to collaborate in class. I am requesting risers to raise desk heights, recliner seats for those with back troubles, and portable lap desks.

My Students

My students are a diverse community, most are freshmen, which means it's their first year in the building. They might be anxious about being a new school, the constantly changing environment, the expectations of all their teachers, and the stress of learning a new way of speaking.

These adolescents will be studying French, Italian or Chinese as part of their college-prep course-load.

My room also serves as a homeroom and club meeting space. Unfortunately, many of my students are too tall for the standard classroom-issue furniture!

My Project

A variety of seating options will provide students with an additional way to express preference(student voice) in the classroom. as well as lower the afffective filter." According to the affective filter hypothesis, certain emotions, such as anxiety, self-doubt, and mere boredom interfere with the process of acquiring a second language. They function as a filter between the speaker and the listener that reduces the amount of language input the listener is able to understand. These negative emotions prevent efficient processing of the language input."

One of the ways we can reduce the affective filter his by providing low-anxiety environments.

I am requesting bed risers to change the height of desks so students can choose to stand while working and provide a more comfortable work environment for the tall students when sitting is required. I am also requesting adjustable stadium seats and portable lap-desks so students can work and collaborate where they work best.

Once the students' physical needs have been met, they will be better engage with the topic at hand, tune into the sounds of a new language, and continue on their path towards biliteracy.
