Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 23 adorable 2nd graders who are enthusiastic and excited about school. They love learning and coming to school every single day. My students feel valued and heard. My students are provided with many engaging learning activities every day. Our class is a happy place where all students are encouraged and expected to reach their full potential. My students and their families have big dreams for their future.
My school is in Union City, California.
It is located in a low income/high poverty neighborhood. I have many second language learners who have parents who work 2-3 jobs. Some are homeless, migrant workers, or live with 2-3 other families in a small apartment. Our school provides 100% of the students with free lunch.
I grew up in a similar neighborhood and had a similar background. I have overcome many obstacles and have a Masters degree. My past is my passion for my students future. I have seen first hand how Education, hard work, and high motivation can help at-risk students succeed. I want my students to have what many high poverty schools are not able to provide for them.
My Project
Flexible seating will give my students seating choices to work on throughout the day. The requested flexible seating of a couch and pillows will provide my students with a happy and very cozy learning environment. Providing a listening center is extremely important for my students who struggle to read. It will allow my students to read along and build their reading skills and vocabulary. Many students are learning English as a second language and need to hear many books read to them in English. The individual CD players and headphones will allow my students to have the freedom to listen to books of their choice independently.
Flexible seating and a listening center will enhance the reading skills of my students and create a cozy learning environment where my students can thrive.My students will be motivated by the freedom they will have to learn where they feel the most comfortable and sit where they want.
The listening center and headphones will also block out noises and distractions during reading.
The comfortable couch and floor cushions will give my students comfortable and flexible seating choices to listen to books on their individual CD players.
