I will be teaching math to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in a remedial education program (REP) next year at my current middle school. REP students are behind their peers in academic development and lack the foundational skills from elementary school to be successful in their current grade level. My students are energetic and enjoy interactive learning.
REP students have the same opportunity as peers to be successful, given the right environment and motivation.
As middle schools don't have recess, students are often fidgety and restless. REP students, in particular, attend class instead of going to PE, Band, Art, etc. and don't have the opportunity to get energy out. I have found that when students are provided opportunities for movement they are more successful. While students often participate in activities that involve movement within the classroom, I would like to provide for them a means of movement while sitting.
It is my goal to ensure that REP students grow academically with the belief that they can, and will, close their learning gaps to perform at their greatest potential. We will embrace our community of learners who work together to make learning purposeful, engaging, and student-centered.
My Project
Learning here is purposeful as every student has differing deficiencies and strengths. This purposeful learning helps ensure that every moment counts, and that every moment of class is filled with learning opportunities to help our students become their best selves.
Our students spend each class learning in a Math Workshop setting which elicits small group instruction and student based stations.
My goal is to provide additional seating options, like wiggle seats, lap desks, and ball seats, which will allow students to work in small groups without needing to bring their chair. These flexible seating options have been shown to increase focus and student engagement because they give students the opportunity to get extra energy out while they work. These flexible seating options will be the beginning of a new setup with the class and I can hardly wait to see the growth it will provide for students.
