Flexible Seating Is Not Just for Elementary Schools
Help me give my students flexible seating opportunities (barstools for standing desks, coffee table for a work station) to promote engagement and interaction.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are much more than what meets the eye. They are kind, thoughtful, funny (it’s so hard to not laugh in the middle of class at times), engaging, curious, intelligent, and honest. They have moments where they are the stereotypical high school students, but within seconds they can blow me away with their abstract comments and thoughts on class materials.
They think of others and what they might need constantly.
In fact, at one point I went to school with what I thought was as asthma attack, and all the students were concerned, supportive, and kind. One student was so worried when I greeted him at the door that he offered to run to my desk to grab my inhaler.
My students bring joy and laughter, grey hairs and stress, and so much love and hope for the future.
My Project
Most students groan and complain when they enter an English classroom. It’s a required class, so can we really blame them (that much)? However, English class can be full of real-world connections, applications, growth in empathy, and the beginnings of a love of learning.
Students interact on a daily basis in my secondary ELA classroom, and flexible searing allows for more interaction, engagement, warmth, and comfort.
Sure, some students may still groan or complain when entering any class in high school, but if I can create a comfortable, safe space where students can engage with each other and literature through seating more comfortable to them, I’ll call that a win.
