Most students groan and complain when they enter an English classroom. It’s a required class, so can we really blame them (that much)? However, English class can be full of real-world connections, applications, growth in empathy, and the beginnings of a love of learning. Students interact on a daily basis in my secondary ELA classroom, and flexible searing allows for more interaction, engagement, warmth, and comfort. Sure, some students may still groan or complain when entering any class in high school, but if I can create a comfortable, safe space where students can engage with each other and literature through seating more comfortable to them, I’ll call that a win.
