"Sitting still is overrated...Children need to move. Movement is one of the ways brains develop. Dendrites grow, connecting this part of the brain to that one. Sitting still makes us dumber. The brain does not grow." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children
My students are high achievers who come from diverse backgrounds.
In my regular education classroom I have 15 first-graders who have diverse learning needs, but for the most part they are bright, active, hands-on learners. In my classroom when students are expected to work at their seat they mostly sit in a chair or stand. These students also tend to squirm most of the day by sitting on their knees and leaning over furniture. My students' love for being up and moving hinders their ability to focus on and complete given tasks.
My Project
While I am teaching some of my students quickly lose focus because they feel the need to stand, move, fidget, or talk in order to release their built up energy. Previously through a DonorsChoose project, I was able to bring stability stools in the classroom. This became and has remained the first choice seat for my students. Unfortunately, when I moved to first grade these stools are too tall for most of my students and they often fall off causing safety concerns. My students have begged for new stools so they could remain focused and attentive to their work. As a class, we chose these KORE stools because they are shorter and more appropriate for students in first grade.
Research has proved that when students are able to move their brains are awake and learning.
The KORE stools a will provide stimulation for their bodies and brain, which will help them, maintain focus. Once students are able to focus their learning goals will be limitless.
When students use the KORE stools as an alternative seating choice their brain is awake allowing them to maintain focus on their learning. All support to this project will be greatly appreciated and will help improve the learning environment in my classroom.
