I love the fact that they all come from such diverse backgrounds and each one has some special trait that makes them unique! Some have lots of support at home, some have people that try really hard to help, but can't, and then there are those kids that do not have anyone outside of school that can aid in their success.
I am lucky enough to have students that genuinely want to learn in either academics, life skills, or both.
I teach in a Title I school where every student receives free breakfast and free lunch. To say that it is a struggle to find a way to make school fun and enjoying for them is an understatement. I love being the one constant in some of their lives.
My Project
"Can we move around the room to read?" is the most common question I get when I ask students to read independently. They like to stretch out, stand up, or just get comfy in order to focus on what they have to read. Sitting at your desk all day does not appeal to them anymore than it appeals to us.
If I can provide them with a comfortable, safe space that makes them more excited about the task at hand, I am all for it!
Many students are constantly moving, or standing, even when they are trying to read so I would love to try flexible seating to see if it makes a difference in their endurance levels. At this age, they should be able to stay in one spot, focus, and read for at least 25 minutes. I would love to be able to provide them with choices as to where they read since the act of reading isn't always their favorite thing to do.
