My Students

I teach 3rd grade at a low income/high poverty school. I already know some of my students face different challenges in and outside of school. I want my students to know that this school is always a safe and positive learning environment. Creating a positive classroom environment requires students to trust teachers and feel cared about.

My students are always willing to challenge themselves.

I am working on instilling growth mindsets rather than fixed mindsets in my students by telling them it's okay to make mistakes because we learn from them and that no matter how hard something may be that we just need to say, "We can do hard things." I do not want them to give up on something that may be challenging. My students are my joy, and I am so glad that each of them is in my class. All I want is the best for my students.

I also think it is important to teach students to think outside themselves. We raised money for a classroom that was affected by Hurricane Harvey, and the classroom conversations that were said blew my mind. I want to continue to teach students to think of others.

My Project

Flexible seating increases student motivation and engagement. Research says that flexible seating helps burn more calories, improves metabolism, creates better oxygen flow to the brain, and improves posture. This school year, I have bought a few flexible seating materials for my classroom. A few seats have worn out, and being a teacher on a budget I cannot afford replacing seating every year. The yoga balls have been a huge hit in my classroom, and I can tell my students focus better and are more engaged in a lesson. I want to get heavy duty seats in my classroom that won't need replacing every year and are easy to clean.

Flexible seating is a game changer in the classroom with many benefits in student learning.

I know that the seating in this project will help my students in many ways. I have seen some of my ADD/ADHD students excel dramatically in school because they are more engaged and the focus is there. Classrooms today need to look different than they did in the past.
