My Project
My third-grade students learn better when they are more comfortable. A lot of them like to sit on the floor to read, write, and work on math projects. With a classroom that has a tile floor, cushions help them to be more comfortable. A flexible classroom that includes floor seating, offers my students the opportunity to learn a great skill: finding the learning environment that works best for them by making choices about where and how to sit.
Adding floor seating gives my students another choice for how to sit, one that might be more comfortable, and offers a new way to learn in the classroom.
Prolonged sitting in chairs can lead to a few physical problems for students, including decreased circulation and poor posture. Spending time sitting on the floor, on the other hand, can increase hip mobility and strengthen the core muscles.
By offering floor seating, I can harness my students’ ability to find learning positions that feel good to them, while also helping to keep their core muscles strong. One of the overlooked benefits of floor seating is what happens when students want to change positions or try another type of seating — they get to move their bodies. It is important to give students the ability to move around throughout the day. It’s going to make them more productive and more engaged with their learning.
These floor cushions are not only fun to look at, but will be a relaxing and more comfortable part of the school day. My students will become more comfortable, happier, and ready to learn better.
