Help me give my students these fluorescent light filters to block out the lights, adjustable bar stools to sit more comfortably at a high tables, and these table risers to raise our low tables for our students.
I am anticipating a classroom full of twenty-five inquisitive, creative, and active third graders who are coming to school with a love of learning, need to collaborate with their peers, as well as learning how to develop problem-solving skills.
My classroom is made up of diverse learners from a wide range of backgrounds.
Some of my students are English Language Learners (ELLs), some of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and some have special learning needs. All of my students need to be actively engaged in their learning and need a classroom that can meet the needs of these diverse learners. Children need to be able to move their bodies to get their brain-firing neurons for reading, math, science, social studies, writing, and art. Children also need an environment that is relaxing, and engaging.
My Project
Help me give my students these alternative ways to sit and learn within my classroom! These stadium bleacher seats, as well as these coffee tables will allow my students to have a different approach to how they learn!
Flexible seating allows my students to take charge of their learning and make choices which best support their learning.
During independent work times they will be able to choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students are limited to their choices to work in a variety of locations in our room. However, this will start the journey to empower them with the flexibility to work at different tables, sitting or laying on the floor with a different chair. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them to expand their thinking. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice.
