Help me give my students portable laptop desks to sit /stand, fluorescent light filters to block out the lights, and Kore wobble chairs to help my students move while still focusing on their work.
I am anticipating a classroom full of twenty-five inquisitive, creative, and active third graders who are coming to school with a love of learning, need to collaborate with their peers, as well as learning how to develop problem-solving skills.
My classroom is made up of diverse learners from a wide range of backgrounds.
Some of my students are English Language Learners (ELLs), some of my students receive free and/or reduced-price lunch and some have special learning needs. All of my students need to be actively engaged in their learning and need a classroom that can meet the needs of these diverse learners. Children need to be able to move their bodies to get their brain-firing neurons for reading, math, science, social studies, writing, and art. Children also need an environment that is relaxing, and engaging.
My Project
Learners need a brain-based 21st-century classroom to prepare them for our ever-changing society. We want to transform our traditional learning environment to a more relaxed learning environment with flexible seating option; my students need more seating options. My students will continue to discover where and how they learn best. The Kore stools, lap desk, and fluorescent light filters will aid in strengthening their learning throughout our day.
Young children need to move and research shows brains function best when children are able to move their bodies.
With flexible seating, my students will be able to move in and out of whole group, small group, and individual work. All of my students (especially my ELL students) need to collaborate. I plan to create a classroom that lends itself to increased opportunities for collaboration. I have students who have special learning needs, and many students who struggle with attention deficit. Sitting at a desk all day is not optimal to learning, and when given a chance kids always choose a seat other than a hard chair. With different seating options, my students will be empowered to make choices for their own learning.
