Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in a very diverse neighborhood in Chicago. Our students come from all different backgrounds and cultures. We strive to provide a safe and positive learning environment that is welcoming to all students and their families. We have over 300 students in our English Learner (EL) program who speak over 30 different languages. Many of these students are refugees or newcomers from other countries. Often times they come to our school not knowing any English at all. However, they are motivated and hard-working and put forth a lot of effort to learn the target language and the culture of their peers. Although they have had many different experiences, they are hungry to learn and ready to have fun! We also focus on community love and celebrating diversity.
My Project
At our school, we are very excited to be opening up an addition next year. This means for the first time since I started the Spanish program at our school eight years ago, we are finally going to have a Spanish classroom! The students and I are so excited and grateful because we will finally have a space to emerge in the language and explore the culture. I will no longer teach on a cart or carry all my supplies from class to class!
Flexible seating, a new carpet and other classroom essentials will give my students ownership of the way they learn and will also make our classroom fun and beautiful.
The most important thing for me is to make my students comfortable and happy about learning Spanish. I am confident that these new items will be greatly appreciated and loved in our "clase de español"!
