Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school are eager, African American (67%) and Latino (23%) scholars. Our school has a high population of foster kids, single-parent households and students living with extended family members. Our school is a Title One school in which eighty percent of our students qualify for free school breakfast, lunch and supper. Financial strains have begun to inhibit the quality of education that I can offer my students. I am struggling to buy all the materials that would help me to provide the quality of education that my students deserve. I am hoping this project will make a tremendous impact on the tools that I can use to further my students' education.

My Project

Currently, our classroom is furnished with heavy, bulky chairs and tables that discourage collaboration. This year, I personally hand made pillows and purchased a handful of stools to allow for more movement and promote collaborative learning. My students love using the stools to pull up to another desk to get help from a friend and use pillows to do work on the rug.

Tables would take our flexible seating to the next level!

Students could have one, low table surface to complete work on the rug and two, round collaborative tables to pull stools up to work in groups. My scholars will be able to move more freely, work together more easily and share materials. Students, for years to come, will be able to benefit from this new furniture. Please consider donating to the scholars of room 20!
