Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My position is the school librarian and I serve approximately 450 students from Pre-K to 8th grade. Many of my students have special needs.
All students attend weekly one-hour library classes where students are taught to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information.
Many of our students don't have a way of getting to the public library and look to the school library to provide all the books and technology. Our students are from low-income families. All students receive free breakfast and almost all receive a free lunch.
Unfortunately, as a result of the current budget crisis, our school does not have the funds to purchase the required materials for the library.
My Project
My students need flexible seating where they can have a nice place to sit and complete assignments or enjoy a good book. Sitting on a hard chair to read in the library is not always comfortable. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them.
Flexible seating will spice up the library and make it more inviting.
Presently we have a few bean bags but more flexible seating is needed. Students will have a nice place to sit to read independently or with a partner. Making sure they are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them to read and learn.
The seating will be placed in a designated area of the library where students can research and read. Students need a library with a comfortable space where they can develop their own ideas, express feelings, take chances, make choices, share their opinions, and grow to be strong individuals.
