My Students

My 4th grade mathematicians and scientists are bursting at the seams with energy!

They walk into my classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and are excited for what is in store for them that day.

I teach in an Accelerated Magnet School. It is a public school that follows the philosophy of The Accelerated Schools Project, which treats all children as academically talented. Our school does not believe that learning should go faster. Instead, the inquiry method is taught to help students solve problems on their own or in teams.

My job as a teacher is to empower students to become creative thinkers, critical thinkers, and problem solvers. I stress the importance of continually learning and being able to apply their new knowledge to complex, open-ended challenges. These children are our future, and we need young adults who will proceed confidently and competently into the new horizons of life and work.

My Project

I'm a firm believer in keeping the focus on what's really important: the students. Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting in rows of desks all day.

I believe it is important to let students move in class instead of being expected to sit still all day at their desks.

They need an appropriate way to release their extra anxiety, energy, frustration, and boredom during the day through quiet movement at their desk that doesn't distract others. Workplaces are moving toward this idea, but schools have been slower to catch on for a variety of reasons, including cost, convenience, and perhaps the assumption that “sit down and pay attention” is the best way to learn.

The bed risers and balance boards will give my students the choice to stand and move while doing their work. For students who do not wish to stand, the Bouncy Bands for both the chairs and desks will allow them to move while sitting. Some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior!
