Flexible Seating for Student-Centered Learning!

My Students

I am so lucky this year to have such an amazing class. They are diverse, kind, curious, and best of all, always keep me on my toes! Nearly all of my students are bilingual, with many of them now learning English as their second language. They come from all over the world and each bring a wealth of different knowledge and experiences.

Despite the differences, my students do an incredible job working together help everyone succeed and feel valued.

They truly are leaders who understand that it is OUR classroom, and we are all one team.

My Project

My students this year are book MONSTERS! My library has expanded exponentially because my students just cannot get enough. They are constantly begging me to do Daily 5, because they know they will have the opportunity to read, write, and engage with the text. Part of Daily 5 is giving students the choice of not only what to do, but where to sit. As 5th graders, they relish this opportunity for some more autonomy.

The students know exactly where in the room they will be the most successful, and that is usually some other place in the room that is not their desk.

They love sitting on the carpet, or in the few other flexible seating options we have in the room. However, we do not have enough options for every student. This project, including Flex-Space Comfy Floor Seats and wobble cushions, will help give each student a place to work where they can be successful, get their wiggles out, and encourage partner and small group work.
