This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach special education in a high poverty area. My self-contained class is for students who have mild intellectual disabilities. These students range from 2nd grade to 5th grade. We work daily on general education content, along with working on adaptive skills and needs.
My students may face many challenges, but they are the sweetest and most hardworking students I have ever taught.
They inspire me every day. These children have goals that they want to achieve, and I want to be able to help them master them. Whether it is to improve social skills, tie their shoes, or learn how to read and write, I want to help specially design their instruction to match their needs.
My Project
These different seating options, including wobble chairs, active stools, a comfy floor seat, and a balance ball chair, will allow my students to move and be comfortable while they learn. They work so hard, but many of them have a challenging time sitting still. If they can move while they learn and work, then they will be able to get more out of their learning.
My students do best with learning when they are motivated and have a form of choice; If they choose how they sit to learn and work, then they will be more focused.
This gives them a more individualized setting to learn and make progress. Flexible seating can also reduce the amount of behavior problems. My students will be able to have their own space where they can focus without being distracted or uncomfortable. They will also be more engaged with what they are doing in the classroom.
