Flexible Seating for Second Grade

My students need alternative seating options including yoga mats, wobble cushions, bean bag seats, portable reclining chairs, wobble chairs, and balance balls to provide the most effective and comfortable learning environment possible!

My Students

Did you ever have a difficult time sitting in the same desk, in the same classroom, day after day as a child? For many of my 2nd Grade students, it can be extremely difficult for them to remain focused when being given an assigned work space to sit in each day.

Each year, there are additional students within my school being diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and autism.

For these students (as well as all other students), being able to choose a space to work in can provide motivation.

The children at my school love learning, although the environment in which they learn best may vary greatly. I want to incorporate alternative seating in my classroom to ensure each student has a comfortable place to work where optimal learning can take place! With the help of amazing donors I will be able to provide that opportunity for my students as soon as next school year begins!

My Project

To incorporate flexible seating in my classroom I am hoping to provide my students with many items that will allow them to work on the floor, while standing, or while seated at a table or desk top. Wobble cushions will allow students some movement while sitting on the floor, while a wobble chair can allow them to move while in a seated position. Yoga mats can provide another option for sitting on the floor, and balance balls will provide an option to work at a table or desk.

Flexible seating can increase students' attention spans and make them more actively engaged in the classroom.

Allowing students to choose where they would like to work within the classroom helps them become independent and motivated learners as well.
