My Project

...the teachers are nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of flexible seating danced in their heads.

This sounds like the story that flashes in my head when thinking of adjustments and new set-ups for my classroom. I am working to create a magical learning environment that inspires and welcomes all students. Part of evolving my classroom involves the design of the room - particularly, flexible seating.

A student-centered classroom with flexible seating includes a variety of seating options that students can choose to use while they work and learn!

One of the foundations of flexible seating initiative comes down to student choice. Teaching and guiding students to make their own choices, choices they can be proud of, is one of the most valuable lessons we can give them. Therefore, it makes sense that flexible seating - a classroom that allows for and promotes choice when it comes to seating options for learning, REALLY WORKS to engage students, minimize behavior issues, increase attentiveness, and boost learning independence.

My goal is to create a classroom that is calming, child-friendly, and inviting! My third grades are bright, motivated students, but asking them to sit in a traditional desk and chair all day can be detrimental to their learning. Providing these students with seating options (variety of tables and seating options) not only gives them freedom of choice, but allows them to be in control of their own learning. When children are comfortable in their environment, it provides the motivation needed for continued success.
