My students have music only once a week for 45 minutes. So, it is crucial that I make those precious minutes of music learning as meaningful and powerful as they possibly can be. I am eager to help my students to grow in their musicality. The sky’s the limit!
Music can and should be an avenue for my students to express themselves, focus on being creative and let go of some of their worries for a while.
Many of my students speak Spanish as their first language, although some come from as far away as Nepal. A significant percentage of the student population is learning to speak English, while still being held to high standards of learning and achievement in primarily English-based curricula. Music should also bolster their self esteem and help them to feel more positive about coming to school; in order for that to happen, I need to help my students make personal connections to music class, to make music learning worth a lot to them. I hope that if they know people are investing in their music success, they will value music class.
My Project
My pre-K's and kindergartners sit on the classroom carpet during music class, but they don't stay still or in their assigned spot as much as I would like them to. I can't blame them, because the carpet is thin and not exactly cushioning to their little bottoms. Then there's the issue of sitting pretzel-legs style, which quickly hurts their ankles and feet. And, of course, they're children! Kids move, a lot, which is natural. The soft seats are little cushions for the children to sit on, on the floor or in chairs. They're squishy and allow for the students to wiggle around while maintaining focus on the lesson. With these soft cushions, everybody wins!
