I teach in a multi-aged elementary classroom in a school within a school for highly gifted learners. I differentiate, compact, or enrich all subject areas and teach students at their highest instructional level. We learn through a lens that focuses on collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking. Our school-within-a-school program consists of two classrooms totaling about 40 students in grades 2-5. We identify learners based on achievement and ability testing, as well as by parent and teacher recommendations. We focus on identifying who needs to be serviced, then we figure out how to best service the children. This means that the structure of our programming can change from year to year from multi-aged settings to straight grade level placements. Our teachers are trained to differentiate and meet the needs of all students. We provide support for the unique affective needs of students.
My students need comfortable seating to help enhance our cozy classroom environment. Students learn best when they feel comfortable. I don’t have assigned seating in my classroom. I allow students to sit at desks, tables, coffe tables, on benches, or on the floor. Many students prefer to be on the floor and would benefit from a bean bag chair to help support them while they sit. I currently have a few that I have used for many years and they are getting worn out from everyday student use. New beanbag chairs would help to freshen up our classroom and provide an opportunity for more children to enjoy flexible seating at one time.
