My school is in a progressively growing community, with a total enrollment of Pre-K through fifth graders of over 700 students.
The town population is approximately 81,881, with 17 elementary schools in the district. The diversity at our school comes from the economic levels with approximately 45% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. I teach in a self-contained fourth-grade class. I have twenty-eight students from diverse backgrounds.
My Project
I have been collecting flexible seating options for about 3 years. I now have it narrowed down to their favorite which is the Gaiam Ball Balance Chairs. We are also working on adding in more STEM projects each week so supplies are much needed!
Encouraging children to choose their work space and materials gives them even more ownership of their learning.
All children have the innate curiosity and our job as teachers is to keep the flame alive. We do have structure and standards that are to be followed but I also strive to give them creative rights to their learning. I also want our classroom to feel like a place they are encouraged to be the best version of themselves.
