My students need bean bag seats, WOBBLE Chairs, and balance balls to be able to get up, change position, and move around. They will be in my classroom for 95 minutes a day. Too long to sit still or stay in the same seat.
Next year, I get the opportunity to teach the best and brightest mathematicians at our school. These 6th grade students are going to be the pioneers of the Geometry Track Program. Their mission is to learn basically 3 years of content in 1 year so that they can begin Algebra 1 as 7th graders.
The students who attend our school are active physically and mentally.
I want to give them the opportunity to exercise their right to choose how they learn.
My Project
I currently have 11 of the school chairs with wheels and trapezoid tables. This is a good start to a moving classroom.
Being comfortable and having a choice are important in a productive learning environment.
I would like to give my students the option to choose how they absorb new concepts without feeling stagnant, so I would like to add wobble chairs, balance balls, and bean bag chairs to my seating options. Eventually, I would also like to add standing tables, for when standing becomes necessary. In a perfect world, each student would be able to learn in their own individual way. Flexible seating gets students closer to that goal.
