One of three public middle schools in Portland, King Middle School (KMS) has a rigorous curriculum that promotes a high level of student engagement through real-world learning. It has strong fieldwork and service components. King Middle School is dedicated to creating a school where all students succeed at a high level. We serve the most racially, ethnically, and economically diverse neighborhoods in the state of Maine.
Our student body consists of approximately 505 students, where more than 25 languages are spoken, with students coming from 17 countries.
In our school-wide Expeditionary Learning model, students engage in eight to twelve-week experiential learning expeditions. These in-depth and interdisciplinary expeditions require students to engage in sophisticated research, engage with the community in authentic ways, and present their findings in high-quality products presented to real audiences.
My Project
I teach Middle School ELA. Middle Schoolers are a wiggly bunch and the wobble chairs will be a great seating option for those students who just need to move while they learn. The lap desks will provide additional options for students to use the space to work and collaborate. The light filters will create a more inviting environment for our learning, cutting the harsh fluorescent light and replacing it with a softer glow.
Choice in seating options and an inviting learning environment are some of the steps in creating a positive and collaborative learning community in my classroom.
All the new seating options are easy to move around so students can arrange themselves in ways that will make them physically comfortable, which will lead to a better learning and collaborative environment!
