My Students
My students are unique, ambitious and full of creativity and energy! In my classroom I currently have 9 children all who have a diagnosis of Autism. They absolutely love hands-on learning, active play and working together to complete various tasks. They love to come to school each day in order to learn, play and work on how to positively interact and socialize.
Focus is a big struggle for my students and I am hoping to help them by adding more flexible seating options at their work desks!
My students benefit from consistency and the use of extremely engaging activities in order to learn each day.
Our school is located in the inner city part of Philadelphia in an impoverished neighborhood where a lot of children don’t have basic necessities and therefore lack the skills to be successful in today’s world. As a teacher, I strive to fill this gap and give children experiences that they may not have had otherwise.
My Project
One of the biggest struggles for the students with autism in my classroom is maintaining their ability to focus during both group and independent work times. My students are constantly fidgeting in their seats, and looking for ways to soothe their over stimulated senses. While we do have fidgets and weighted options, we lack different seating options for their independent work desks, which is a time in which they need the extra support to focus the most.
Flexible seating options such as these ball chairs will allow my students to focus during independent seat work by allowing them to use their energy in an appropriate manner while completing their work.
