My students need flexible seating options (balance balls and DIY bouncy ball milk crate chairs) so that they can choose the learning space that works best for them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are in a Spanish-English dual language program in an urban neighborhood. They come from many different cultures and languages and arrive full of enthusiasm to learn. Some of them speak Spanish at home and some speak English (or another language). I teach literacy and Science/Social Studies to all 40 students in Spanish.
Our very diverse public school is large, and over 85% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.
Over 65% of our class is comprised of English language learners, including students who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, Tongan, Somali and a handful of other languages. Most of our students have not attended preschool. Together, we have built a dynamic, child-centered environment with high expectations for all children.
My Project
I have seen the positive impact flexible seating has had in other classrooms, and I believe that my students would greatly benefit from options for how they sit at their tables. They would have the opportunity to try out a few different seating options on rotation as I roll them out, then we would decide on expectations for how to choose and use the best learning spot.
By providing flexible seating options for students, my classroom will become a learning studio that supports movement and engagement.
Students will strengthen core muscles and allow for wiggles as they work. They will also feel more comfortable, which will allow for them to feel less stressed and stay on task better. My students with special needs relating to sensory input and attention issues will have a built-in support that doesn't make them stand out from the rest of the students.
