My Students

My Students

My students are in a sixth, seventh and eighth grade gifted classroom.

My students describe our gifted classroom as a place they can be themselves, to explore without being put into a category or box.

They are creative, free thinkers, that desire and need challenges not offered by the regular content curriculum.

Often students describe our class as "structured chaos." They have an opportunity to explore a variety of interests that they might not have known about or are striving to be an expert in. Gifted children are likely to be the next generation’s innovators and leaders—yet they are often invisible in the classroom, lacking the motivation to reach full potential.

My Project

I believe that students need an environment that allows for thinking to grow. Redesigning my classroom to have different seating options will have benefits for my students health and academic success. The benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior.

Beyond allowing students to choose their seat, flexible classroom seating allows students to sit or stand in a way that best suits their body.

Some students have a tendency to move, some wiggle, some bounce, some sway, and some sit with perfect posture. Flexible seating allows students to physically become more comfortable while they are learning.
