it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are awesome! It is my first year teaching third grade, and I was so curious what the students would be like at this age. This class has surpassed my expectations. They are kind, and they look out for each other (and their teacher!). They are inquisitive and eager to learn new things. They are independent and hard-working when it is time to focus. And they are innovative- They often come up with ideas I hadn't thought of! I most enjoy seeing their unique personalities develop, and I can almost picture what they will be like as adults.
Our class is dual immersion class: We learn in English and Spanish and we have native speakers modeling both languages throughout the school day.
We are a diverse group of students: we are white, Hispanic and African American, and we come from different backgrounds. We value and respect each others' languages and cultures, and we are all striving to be bilingual, biliterate, and multicultural. We couldn't do it without each other.
We are a team.
My Project
This project was inspired by my students. I have observed them over the past two months, and I have given them increased freedom in their seating at different times of the day. What I have noticed is they enjoy working in different nooks and floor spaces all around the room. They want to be on their bellies or use a pillow when they are doing independent reading, and for the most part, they are productive in these work spaces. All I have in my room right now are 6 pillows, and they are so popular! I want to give my students more options for flexible seating because I have seen that it works.
Research shows that flexible seating leads to higher student engagement and motivation, creates better oxygen flow to the brain, and improves students' core strength and posture.
Flexible seating is a student-centered approach to education. It gives them choice, responsibility, and ownership over their learning. With guidance, the students decide what work environment will help them be the most successful, and this self-awareness will benefit them both now and in the future.
