Help me give my students floor cushions and colorful tape for a more flexible learning environment, where they can be comfortable, focused, and ready to learn!
As the newly appointed Computer Science teacher at my school, I have the pleasure of working with 25 different groups of bright, creative, innovative, and curious young minds each week. Being that the program is new this year, I need your help to build my inventory of educational resources that will be used to prepare my students for the digital world that we live in today and to give them the tools they will need to make an even bigger difference in the future.
Many of the students at my school do not come from backgrounds that promote the use of technological tools or do not have access to these tools.
My biggest goal this year is to show my students that anyone can be a computer scientist and to especially encourage more women and minorities to join the field of computer science!
My Project
We are requesting floor cushions and colorful tape to help transform the computer lab into an innovation lab, where there are more flexible work stations for students to build robots and other STEM projects. Students love having options when it comes to seating! It allows them to take control of their learning by choosing what will help them to be more comfortable, focused, and engaged during instruction. I want to help my students, especially my special ed population, by giving them more seating choices that will allow them to do amazing work and that will also serve as a way for my students to better understand how they function best!
With generosity from people and companies like you, I can create a positive, relaxed learning environment that creates more movement, more choice, and more fun for the 700+ students that I service!
If I were to receive funding for this project, the first thing I would do is to review the guidelines and expectations of how to use flexible seating in order to better manage my classroom. I would then turn this into a social/ emotional lesson, where students become more familiar with individual wants and needs and gain a better understanding of how everyone learns differently. Next, I would have my students try out the different seating options so that they can figure out which type of seating would allow them to do their best work. In doing so, students would better understand their minds and bodies on a deeper level and would also understand diversity on a learning scale. I would then create a goal to use flexible seating during each activity that I do, ensuring that expectations remain high and that I continue to build flexibility, movement, and self-awareness in my classroom.
