I currently teach 24 wonderful students who are eager to learn! My class is very diverse. We are comprised of different native languages, various learning abilities, and unique interests. With so many varying needs, I am constantly seeking out new ways to provide them more opportunities which promote their success in school, and in life.
The most important skill I could teach my students is to advocate for themselves and their own learning.
One way I can do this is by providing them more choice in their classroom environment, with hopes of them recognizing how/where they work best. I want my students to move on to second grade with a better understanding of their needs as a student, and how they can best be successful.
My Project
My students are 6 and 7 years old. Anyone who has been around that age group knows that they are most successful when there is movement incorporated into their learning. I try to get my students up and moving as frequently as possible, but whenever it is time to sit down, they are no longer able to wiggle as they need.
Flexible seating will empower my students to have more autonomy over their own learning conditions.
I believe that providing my students with different seating options such as wobble stools, stadium seats, standing desks, and weighted lap pads, they will have the opportunity to choose what seating arrangements work best for them.
