This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education resource teacher and I co-teach in a second-grade classroom. We currently 29 students that include diverse learners, ELL students, and a range of learning styles.

Of all the students in our school, 97% are from low-income households and 95% of them are minorities.

We are an inner-city Chicago school that every year has the privilege to serve many refugee students who are first coming to the United States to escape hardships and danger in their home countries.

Despite the range of backgrounds our students come from, they are excited and eager to learn when they come to school every day!

My Project

The past year has been challenging for everyone and our students have been learning at home for at least a year. The transition back into the classroom has been exciting but also challenging. Students are accustomed to the freedom to move about their classroom but due to COVID, they are unable to do this. Here is where flexible seating comes in!

We have noticed an amazing difference in our students when they are given a choice in their seating.

It allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at a desk. We want to expand their choices and provide them with as much support and opportunity for movement now that they are back in the classroom.

The products I have selected will help my students by allowing them to choose the kind of seating that works best for them. Both stool types allow students to have whole-body movement while staying in their spot. This is very helpful for students who are more wiggly or need that sensory input. The chair fidget bands have a dual purpose in that they will support students with flexible seating needs and give them a fidget that they can use while working.
