My third graders love to learn despite the challenges that they face on a daily basis. During the school day my students are creative thinkers, problem solvers, mathematicians, scientists, readers, friends, explorers, and learners. Many of the students are classified as ESE students and receive additional supports in our inclusion classroom. After the school day ends, many of my students face situations like homelessness, poverty, foster care, divorced parents, frequent relocations. All students at my Title 1 School receive free breakfast and lunch and school is a safe haven for many of my students. In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, three students have moved to my classroom from Puerto Rico and are working hard to learn English and adapt to life in Florida.
My Project
My students often have a hard time sitting still throughout the day. Sitting in chairs for whole group lessons, small groups, and independent work can be exhausting!! These flexible seating options will provide my students with options to make school more engaging and comfortable. The multicolored comfy seats will allow students to quickly and easily move anywhere around the room for collaborative learning opportunities
Students are given a sense of empowerment, choice, and control when they are able to choose the seating option that works best for them.
This is especially important since many of them lack structure and stability in their homes. I strive to make my classroom a positive, safe, and calming learning environment for all of my students. The wobble stools, cushions, and ball chairs will provide additional choices for students.
A lot of my students have accommodations due to having ADHD and other learning difficulties. The wobble stools have proven effective in providing these learners the opportunity to quietly move without distracting others. These seating options will give my students more opportunities to feel successful at school!
