The students of our community are like that of so many others. Some are affluent and some aren't, some have many needs, some don't, and for some students school is the safest and best part of their day. The students come into my room every day excited to tell me a story or eager to know what we will be doing that day. I want my students to love learning and love school.
I teach in a rural community that loves and takes pride in its school district.
The schools in our community are a hub of activity all year long. Whether it be academics, sports, extracurriculars, or the kids and families utilizing the parks for summer entertainment. There is always something happening at our schools. We are a Title I school reaching many low income students as well as many students coming from hard working families. Our students work hard and have gone on to be successful contributing members of society. Many of them return to our great community to raise their families!
My Project
I believe learning starts with the design of the classroom environment. Classrooms traditionally have been stiff and rigid desks and chairs in neat little rows. That may have worked in the past, but from my experience today's students need a change. Kids have changed and we need to change with them.
I want the classroom to be welcoming, inviting, and engaging.
This starts with the environment. I believe wobble stools are just the beginning to changing the environment of the classroom. They don't just change it visually, but they also give new options for students who need movement. I can't sit still and listen in a chair for 6 hours, so why are we expecting this from our students? Flexible seating in a classroom will inherently give students opportunities to practice 21st century skills.
Academic instructional differentiation is a commonly used technique to meet diverse mental/emotional needs of students, and it's time we start applying that same theory to the meet the physical learning needs of students, which will in turn, support their mental/emotional/social needs, and result in a student-centered classroom where all children feel safe, comfortable, and valued.
