My first graders are vibrant, eager, and energetic students. We have made over our room, filling it with flexible seating and a variety of spaces for students to do their very best work!
We are in a public school in VA and we represent a diverse student population.
My twenty-nine first grade students come from a variety of language and cultural backgrounds. I work every day to make our classroom feel like a family, full of safety, love, and support.
In creating a student-centered classroom, I try to offer students choice and movement. Students work best in all different spaces and I am working to give students a variety of spaces to do their best work. For some students, that is standing, sitting in a chair, or working on the floor. I want my classroom to be a place that is inviting, innovative, and where my students are motivated to do their best work. My students love to work away from their desks. They enjoy the freedom to move to a comfortable location and to choose where they can best focus. These lap desks help the students have a flexible choice to do their best work! Teachers who use flexible seating report higher student motivation and decreased behavior issues.
When my students have the freedom to work where they choose, they are more able to focus and produce their best work.
