At our school, we strive to be great, to be amazing, and to be leaders. My first graders are a great group of students who work very hard to achieve their goals each week, strive to learn more and become better readers. Learning is key in our classroom.
I believe in meeting each and every student's needs on a daily basis.
Over 75% of students in our building qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, come from low economic backgrounds, and face many challenges both in and outside of the classroom. Our class is made up of various cultural backgrounds and 60% of the students come from an economically disadvantaged family. My students enjoy working with each other and are eager and willing to learn every day.
My Project
Many students can focus and work better if they are able to move easily in their seat or move to a quiet place in the classroom. I am asking for eight Pilates Stability Balls, ten Plastic Stack Stools, three Wobble Chairs, six Soft Seats and five Lap Trays. The flexible seating options I have chosen will allow some students to still work at their desks while being able to move in their seat at the same time. Flexible seating will also allow for easy small group settings in the classroom. In our classroom, we spend a lot of time in small groups for reading, math and intervention. A smaller group number allows the students to work closer with the teacher and allows the teacher to meet all students' needs. The stools and seat cushions will allow us to work at a table or on the floor together. Students will be more comfortable, which leads to better focus, listening and more learning.
Every student has their own learning style.
Other flexible seating options I have chosen for my project will also allow students to work independently. Lap desks and bean bag chairs will allow for independent work in an area of the room the student prefers. My students spend time reading, writing and working independently during our Daily 5 Language Arts rotations every day. Students would be able to also use the lap desks and chairs for testing, partner work or any other need. Research has proved that wobble chairs and stability balls allow active students to work at their desk or tables, while allowing them to fidget and move about to help with focusing and sensory processing disorders.
