My Students

My students come to class every day with a readiness to learn attitude and I want them to experience school in the best possible classroom. My classroom strives to give each student everything they need to accomplish the goals that we set together. That means that I also spend most of my paycheck on supplies for them. These students tend to struggle in school because they have real-life problems that are blocking their ability to learn. Despite the challenges they face, they get up each morning and come to school. I want to make sure their school experience is a positive one!

I teach at a Title I school in North Carolina where 60 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Students in the area of Durham County come from homes of hard-working parents. That means that students come from homes where parents want to be involved and help their children. The income of the area prevents students always being able to afford what is needed for school.

My Project

My students are a creative, active bunch! They are inquirers who need a variety of space in which to read, collaborate, create and learn. With these flexible seating options, they can move seamlessly around the room for a change of scenery or for grouping for any sort of project, discussion, small group help session, or individual work. Students can choose a space in which they are comfortable, from tall standing tables to stool or traditional chairs. Reading around the room is even better with the comfortable butterfly chair. These options will add enjoyment to the classroom and engagement in learning.

As part of this goal, I have requested several functional pieces of furniture that add flexibility as well as academic purpose.

These choices include the following: a set of desks for students preferring to stand, or for projects which require ease of movement for supplies and collaboration- these can be individually used or easily grouped together, chairs for the floor that make for comfortable, single seats during silent reading or independent work, ergonomic stools (wobble stools) which allow for some much needed non-distracting movement while working, also strengthening the cores, regular stools for small group discussion or small group working, and table trays so if students are working around the room they have their supplies and a place to work.
