Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school in a rural community in Florida. Many of my students are from migrant families, and most have non-English speaking parents.
My amazing students are very motivated to pull themselves, and their families, out of poverty.
Many of my students will be the first in their family to graduate from high school. They have so many hardships to overcome. I do my best to provide them with the tools they will need, as they head on to middle school and beyond!
These children seldom get to experience anything beyond school and home. While we are only a little over an hour from Florida's beautiful Gulf Coast beaches, many of my students have NEVER been to a beach. They get very little, if any, educational support at home and have limited access to technology. I do my best to expose them to as much of the world as I can within these four walls.
My Project
I have lots of fidgety fifth graders this year! We need flexible seating options available to those students with the need to move. We need wobble cushions and bouncy bands so that these students can move and be comfortable, without being a disruption to other students. This helps them focus, and allows the class to focus as well.
Flexible seating will accommodate those students challenged with hyperactivity, inability to concentrate, and tactile sensory issues.
Allowing movement, without disruption, gives these students an equal opportunity to be engaged and successful in their education.
Research shows that classrooms that utilize flexible seating see higher success rates.
