Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Third Grade teacher at a Title I elementary school that is located in a high poverty area. Not only do my students have to struggle with getting their basic needs met, they also have to struggle with having a variety of disabilities such as: Specific Learning Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairment, Autism, and ADHD. Almost 90% of students receive free/reduced price breakfast, lunch and supper. The majority of our students are English Language Learners and are highly motivated to learn. Several students need so many types of interventions and differentiation, therefore my classroom is always on the move and learning kinesthetically to keep them fully engaged.
To say I have a diverse group of students would be an understatement.
I have several students who qualify for additional services (resource, speech, counseling) because of special learning needs and abilities. Since my students and their families are low income, high poverty-sometimes their basic needs aren't being met. When a child's basic needs aren't being met, it can be extremely difficult for them to focus and learn. That is why flexible seating in the classroom is so valuable.
My Project
The items I already have in my classroom have had a tremendous positive impact on their ability to focus, concentrate and learn. My students are so excited to get to choose where they sit each day based off of which environment enables them to learn the best.
A variety of seating for my students to choose from would be LIFE CHANGING.
My students definitely cannot sit still, and they love being able to move around on the Balance Balls so they can wiggle and move while still completing academic tasks. The Balance Balls are the most favorite and enjoyable types of seating for students. It provides the sensory and movement that they need for learning throughout the day.
The stools would be an amazing new addition to our classroom so that students have another choice of seating where they feel they learn best. The stools will allow them to move freely while they sit at a desk and enables them to feel more freely to stand up as needed.
The Reading Cushions enable students to use them throughout the classroom, whether they be in a regular chair or sitting on the floor.
The camping chairs are an all-time favorite because my students like to feel like they are in the comfort of the outdoors, while being comfortable in a classroom setting.
I am extremely grateful for the few items I already have because I love seeing how much more focused and excited for learning my students are just based off of what kind of flexible seating they have available to them. These new additions to our classroom would be truly life changing.
