Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at WES are readers. We strive to meet students at their level, work with those who need support, and challenge those that need a boost. In my classroom, students are exposed to reading and have drastically increased their love of reading throughout the years.

My classroom is a place where students come to learn, love to read, and are welcomed into a family.

My students enjoy a "Coffee Shop" reading time each day where they sit in a quiet space with light music and read any book of their choice. This is a time the students love as they get to read anything they want along with participating in guided reading and small group work.

The students at my school learn best when they are comfortable and feel loved. They are savvy with technology but need many breaks and flexible seating to maintain their attention and to achieve their greatest potential as learners.

My Project

Reading happens every day in my classroom. The items I've chosen will be used each day by students from two different homeroom classes during their 4th grade literacy times. My students participate in a balanced literacy model and are engaged in comprehensive instruction and group work throughout each literacy block. The students read for 30-45 minutes each day and are always looking for a comfortable place to separate themselves and dive into their books. They currently use any nook and cranny in the room, which is most commonly on the hard floor. Through the use of these items, students will feel more comfortable in the classroom during their reading time. The tall table will be used for flexible seating, student group work and a space for one-on-one conferring with me, their teacher. The pillows and cushions will be used to get students off the hard floor and onto a space that is comfortable. And of course, how could I forget to update the shelves with books from some of their favorite authors.

By donating to this project you will be providing students with the opportunity to nurture their love of reading in a comfortable learning environment.

Students will be able to focus more on their book/reading and less on feeling uncomfortable. With new flexible seating options, students will be able to participate in group or independent work in a way that will best suit their learning style.
