My students need balance ball chairs, wobble stools, and other forms of flexible seating to improve academic performance while becoming healthier kids!
Do you remember what is was like when you were in first grade? Were you curious, excited, and eager for each school day? My first grade students encompass all of these qualities and much more!
I teach in a Title 1 low income school district in Mississippi.
Approximately 85 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students do not have the resources at home to grow academically, and I want to make sure I provide a safe, loving, learning environment for all of my students grow and become lifelong learners.
My Project
Flexible seating in elementary classrooms is very critical for our little learners. Using a variety of seating arrangements, such as yoga ball chairs and wobble cushions, has proven to increase student engagement and test scores. Bouncy bands offer ADHD students a way to release energy without disrupting the class. Wobble stools offer our students a way to move their bodies quietly and learn at the same time.
Physical activity has been proven over and over again, to improve academic performance.
If kids can't sit still for 8 hours straight, then maybe we shouldn't expect them to! By offering flexible seating in my classroom, I am allowing my students the opportunity to increase their academic performance and become actively engaged learners.
