My middle school is home to around 800 students. It has received an “Excellent” rating on the South Carolina State Report Card multiple times. Fifty-six percent of the population identify as Caucasian, 23% identify as African-American, 13% percent identify as Hispanic, and two percent identify as Asian.
Thirty-two percent of the student population is eligible for free lunch, and seven percent is eligible for reduced lunch.
Thirty-six percent of students at GMA are enrolled in the Gifted and Talented program. This number is higher than the district average of 11%, partially due to the magnet program that brings in students from outside of the zoning area.
English Language Arts is taught to five different periods of students per day, and each group typically contains an average of 25 students. Three different levels of classes are taught each day. Two classes are gifted and talented, one class is advanced, and two classes are on-level, one of which is an inclusion class containing special education students.
My Project
My seventh grade students need a way to let out energy without distracting others. Flexible seating will give them a chance to move and release energy while still working quietly at their desks. Students enjoy working more when they can move!
My inclusion class contains a group of special education students, and many of those students have ADD or ADHD.
These students would especially benefit from standing desks and stools. Many of my students need to move and can sometimes let out their energy in ways that are noisy or distracting to my other students. Allowing these students to stand up and work would help my inclusion class stay focused and on task throughout the period.
