Our fantastic Fourth Grade classroom is an ENL ICT Classroom in a diverse, working class neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. Our students are ENL students, meaning every one of them is currently learning English as a new language. Many of our students also have special needs.
Our students are joyful, funny, motivated and caring towards one another.
Best of all, they want to learn!
We love our students and look forward to giving them all a wonderful 2018-2019 school year and seeing them all achieve their goals.
My Project
Do you remember sitting at your desk all day in a hard elementary school chair?
Research finds that flexible seating creates an optimal learning environment because students are given creative and comfortable sensory seating options while they work.
In today's classrooms, flexible seating creates a student-centered learning environment, which helps fidgety learners focus. It helps remedy student fatigue as brain activity slows down, which occurs when students remain stationary too long.
In our ENL ICT Classroom, our students do not have many seating options. They are in those same hard chairs you remember. Several of our students have special needs including attention and focus issues. Students recline onto the back legs of chairs, fidget in seats and walk away from tables without realizing they are doing so. These actions show us their bodies need sensory input. They need to move! This is why flexible seating options are needed.
The flexible seating options we are requesting will give our kids the sensory input their bodies crave. The rounded bottoms of Wobble Chairs allow children to move in place, without disturbing those around them. Students can safely tip Wobble Chairs back without falling backwards, which keeps their legs active. This improves their blood flow and brain activity. Balance Ball Seats allow students to gently bounce while working. The movement provides them with sensory input so they can learn while also improving muscle tone and posture. Comfy Floor Seats and Wobble Cushions will fulfill student sensory needs during small group work in other areas of our classroom. Our classroom will be a dynamic and student-friendly learning environment. Providing varied flexible seating options will improve student focus, engagement and help them learn.
