This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My Kindergarteners are comprised of 35 amazing students, many of whom come from Spanish-speaking families.

They like coming to school every day because they love to learn Spanish and English and they also have lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic success.

My Project

These items will allow me to create a flexible seating environment in my kindergarten math and Spanish classroom. The wobble stools, allow students to wiggle while maintaining attention to the task at hand or while reading books. The floor cushions allow students to sit on the floor comfortably when writing or working with other students.

Students learn best in a safe, fun, comfortable environment in which they get to make their own choices and have ample opportunities to work together.

Using flexible seating creates this exact learning environment! Allowing students to choose seating that is comfortable to them helps them remain calm, focused, and productive. Flexible seating also allows students to easily move around to work together for partner work or in small groups. These seating options also help students feel comfortable when trying to focus on the lesson being taught and, therefore, increase overall learning.
