My students from Massachusetts are part of our district's amazing autism program. This program provides social thinking and executive planning instruction and support to students in their home school setting. My students are funny, creative and smart. They teach me something new everyday, whether it's a fact about narwhals or how to "Rick-roll" someone. They always keep me on my toes!
Keeping a child’s attention on their school work can be difficult for any parent or teacher.
My students spend approximately three hundred and ninety minutes a day at school. That is a long time to be sitting in their hard school chairs. Many of my students have sensory needs or decreased muscle tone, which makes keeping their attention on their work challenging at times. But even with these extra challenges, my students always strive to do their best and use strategies to help themselves stay regulated.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to find a place that is comfortable and that allows them to make choices that work for their particular learning style. Last year, I implemented flexible seating in my substantially separate classroom and as a result, I saw an increase of on task behavior and more focus with my students. Since I saw such great results, I want to be able to provide the same seating that my kids get in my room, in the general education setting when they integrate into the different classrooms throughout the day. I am asking for wobble seats and standing desks so that my students can be comfortable in all the different settings throughout the day.
