This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
This couch will add to our classroom community spaces! Flexible seating allows for all students to find out in which ways they learn best. It create a community atmosphere and builds relationships between students without them even realizing it! I have noticed that my students are more engaged and willing to work together with flexible seating. My students are currently working with items I have thrifted or collected over the years as flexible seating, such as wobble stools, cushions for the floor, a rocking chair, different table options, and using bouncy bands on their chairs. Making sure my students have options and are comfortable in the room are the most important parts of flexible seating.
My students are all bilingual students, many who have come to the US for the first time.
I want them to feel at home in school, and be able to be themselves when they enter, instead of trying to fit into a specific school box.
I have chosen to add a couch to their flexible seating options to give them a comfortable and new flexible seating option. The couch will allow them to sit with a partner instead of alone, as well as have a comfortable and useful space the classroom. The students will be able to feel at home and still work on their academic success.
